Characteristics and function:
Lower Bowel Tonic (LBT-3) comes from a generic group of herbal formulas that are specific for the colon and benefit the digestive tract. The exact ratio of herbs has great significance for how well it works. Although it has a cleansing or laxative effect, its major functions are to increase muscle tone and flexibility of the intestinal wall and to correct neural and hormonal control throughout the system. Many practitioners of natural methods strongly believe a clean and healthy colon is the first and perhaps the most important step toward better health. The problem is that many laxative type formulas are "addictive" in the sense that the longer you take them, the more you need to take to get the same action. This formula is quite different. Working on muscle tone, it strengthens the colon, instead of just causing bowel movement. After taking this formula for several months, the patient needs less for the same action.
Cascara sagrada, buckthorn and turkey rhubarb are the major components. All have a group of glycosides in them that stimulate catharsis. Two of these glycosides, emodin and chrysophanic acid, work similarly to the brakes and gas pedal in a car, controlling the motility of the colon. This control causes the major building feature of this formula. Cascara sagrada not only acts as a laxative, but restores natural tone to the colon.
Ginger and fennel seeds help reduce gripping or nausea in the intestinal tract during the cleansing phase. Goldenseal strengthens the mucous membranes while raspberry leaves work as a demulcent, soothing the intestinal tract. Lobelia works on nervous control and the cayenne increases blood circulation.
Directions:
Two to three capsules, two the three times daily or as needed. Diarrhea is often experienced for the first few days. If this continues after the third day, decrease dose accordingly.

Characteristics and function:
St. John's wort (GP 0.3% Hypericin) has become quite popular because of its strong antiviral and antibacterial action. This has made it quite effective in treatment programs established for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, herpes, hepatitis and even HIV. An additional and very important, effect of St. John's wort is its antidepressant properties. This is particularly useful as many people with viral problems also display symptoms of depression or suffer from nervousness.
The active constituent in St. John's wort responsible for this antidepressant effect is hypericin, which has been shown to reduce both emotional and physical stress. Tissue under stress also receives an increased blood supply during consumption of this herb.
